Steroids, diet pills, various unmentionable things, and all in your email account. If one has had their email account or mobile phone number for some time, it is not unreasonable to suggest that a quarter of the messages might be the unsolicited bulk messages known collectively as spam.

Spammers primarily work by compiling email addresses and phone numbers in databases, which they share with one another. Often spammers use automatic tools (including Viruses Yuck!) to get this information so they are not even working that hard to make you annoyed.

The use of automatic tools by spammers also means that anytime you get tricked into responding to spam (we’ve all done it at some point) your private address information is automatically updated into these sharing databases. So one mistake can potentially mean receivingnever ending spam.

A number of social networking tools, like Facebook, email service providers, and phone companies have instituted a number of protections to cut down on spam. Unfortunately, the primary ways these tools work is for the user to actively block or report the spam attempt. Since users cannot reliably and regularly do this operation it is little more than a Band-Aid.

A far better prophylactic would be to reduce one’s reliance on email, or similar services where information is received at specific address tied to the user.

A work network, like BlueJean Time, offers such protective capabilities. First, BlueJean Time is in the password protected cloud granting an automatic layer of protection. Second, the vast majority of communications on BlueJean Time are done on topics which means there is no address or location to send spam to in the first place.

Reducing spam, then, is a matter of acclimatizing oneself to a different, address-less mode of communication. In this case a work network like BlueJean Time.
