So Brandon, Eric and I have a long running argument about search. I'm going to try to represent each point of view and where I'm wrong, please fix in the response section.

Brandon's perspective is that humans want simplicity in their search experience and are used to having one search field to enter to search across all types of info. Eric/Sol's position is that business search is different than social search in that you are not looking for types of things as much as looking for specific things and as such you need to be able to specify different attributes of the thing you are looking for so you can zero into exactly what you want.

As a compromise (I believe), Brandon suggested that we have one field show up initially, "Thing" which is what most people are really searching for.. a specific item. After search results are returned, then we can show Person, Place and When (To/From) search criteria that can be added.

I don't like the idea of one search field even though i think Brandon is right that "Thing" is what people will naturally want to fill in, because I want it to look different and strange to emphasize the difference in our platform. Additionally, there are those like me, who are often interested in looking at what a particular person has posted and then based upon what I see, decide to drill down using, Place or Date or thing.

Your thoughts?
