The drivers for this approach have historically been addressing horrendous commutes due to traffic, a component of a company's disaster recovery, or more recently a strategy for cost savings.

What we've found is that, for us, being extreme about telework, meaning having employees get together only for social or HR reasons, has enabled huge savings in office space cost and travel. Below, we've documented the specifics of these savings.

These numbers are ballpark approximations based upon our company data. We are using real data from our company (Blue Collar Objects) because it is concrete and the numbers are conservative. The savings realized went straight to the bottom line.

Traditional approach (year 2005)

approximately 40 employees

approximately 10K square feet office space

approximately $20K/month lease cost -> $250K per year cost

Telework/BlueJean Time approach (starting year 2011)

approximately 40 employees

approximately 1k square feet office space

approximately $2K/month lease cost -> $25K per year cost

Savings -> approximately $225,000 per year

There are other articles which describe how we executed the change to realize the above savings. The changes were largely in technology, processes and attitudes... all bundled up into this thing called Culture. Find related articles on the technology and the methods by using #bluejeantime in a topic search (click here).
